PART 1: VISITING SOMALIA

Hello world! Peace be upon you all.

THE TIME HAS COME Y'ALL!

As you've probably guessed from the title of this post, the time has come for this Canadian gal to visit the land of her ancestors - for the very first time! The past few days have been a whirlwind of packing, buying things for the trip, and of course, gifts for the family. 

I'm feeling a bit nervous actually. My Somali is pretty good but I can't help add in a few English words here and there. And to be completely honest, I'm also a bit nervous about walking out in the streets among people who have seen nothing but war and violence. I've heard countless crazy stories. Their mindset and ways are different than my own. Maybe my thoughts about them will have changed at the end of my travel.

But despite all the nervousness, I'm actually very excited now that I'm waiting for my flight. The reality that I'm going has finally sunk in! I'm looking forward to meeting my grandparents and other family members for the first time, help the less fortunate, and to just actually set foot in the land that my parents and other first generation Somalis are always talking about.

The other day I had an epiphany.  I was downtown with my friend and we walked past this Asian bakery that had a really long line of customers waiting to get in. The smell coming out of the store was amazing! We decided to check it out and see what all the fuss was all about. We got in line and in just 5 minutes, there were 10 more people waiting in line behind us. The guy standing right behind us was actually Somali. Anyway, my friend and I were guessing what kind of Asian baked goods the store was selling and were wondering if it'd taste good. The Somali guy behind us smoothly joined our conversation. WEDDING NIGHT FEARS? MY MESSAGE TO MUSLIM WOMEN

Hi everyone! I haven't written anything in a while...school has been keeping me busy! It's my last year of undergraduate studies. Pray for me y'all! :) Anyway, this post is not advice for what brides should do on their wedding night. I want to talk about a serious problem in the Muslim community that disturbs me. A lot of Muslim girls believe that even if they were scared or nervous, they cannot refuse to have sex with their husbands on their wedding night because of the hadeeth that says a woman will be cursed by the angels until morning if she refuses. Instead of telling their new husbands they want to take things slowly, girls are resorting to some sort of patch that they stick on their arm that prevents their menstruation cycle from coming. Then, they take it off before their nikaah so that their period comes on their wedding day and then ta-da!! WANT TO MARRY AN AJNABI MAN? MY ADVICE!

I must say that there's a bit of an ajanabi (non-Somali) craze going on these days especially among the girls. It's quite prevalent among many masaajid girls. Once a white man converts to Islam and becomes a regular in the masaajid (mosque) they're all over him! This bothers me. In addition, there a lot of stories going around about Somali girls who have been divorced by their ajanabi husbands; the parents like to say this happened because the husband wasn't Somali.  Now, before y'all start the accusations, let me inform you that I am not an ajanabi hater. Neither am I a person who strictly stays with their "own kind"; race and/or culture is of no concern to me. Rather, this post is my sincere advice to my abaayo, my sister in kinship, or even to any other non-Somali woman, who is about to marry or is interested in someone who is ajanabi.
